I am disheartened. I had dinner and drinks with friends in Manhattan, many of them do not have any children yet (a few might not have any at all). The conversation slowly turned toward kids and motherhood. Almost all of the women there had nothing but complaints or low expectations of motherhood. That it would be annoying to not have a nanny or ruin your life as you want it.
I was floored. I wish I had said more; defended it all. Yes, it changes everything. Yes, your life isn't all about you anymore. Yes, you don't have as much time.
But to consider it all to be a nuisance? Certainly it is hard work--the hardest there is. But it is phenomenal and makes life all worth it. I guess you don't know how much it changes you until you are a mother. Maybe this is why there are so many lazy parents out there? They expect life to be the same even after kids arrive? I wish I had spoken up in defense of it all.
